President Obama’s Weekly Address: Gas Prices. The Republican response to this was that energy industry jobs will be lost… It almost seems like they were not listening to the address at all. Furthermore, Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America rather than the oil industry. He must (aim to) do what is best for the entire country, not just what is best for the people employed by the oil industry. It strikes me as reasonable that lifting subsidies on the oil industry will increase the government’s ability to spend on other, more immediately useful, things. It is actually unclear to me why these subsidies ever made sense…
