I am sure most consumers of the internet have heard of the Collateral Murder video by now. Now it seems that the military has apprehended the person responsible for the leak that allowed WikiLeaks to post the video. I think the US armed forces are doing exactly what they have to do with regard to this matter; aside from the video, Bradley Manning also leaked over a quarter of a million sensitive diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks. However, I also appreciate that Manning leaked the video, as the actions of the soldiers in the helicopter brings the sad truth of a protracted modern war to the general American population.
But, based on the article, it is unclear what motives drove Manning to leak the video and the cables. On the one hand, Wired states that Manning sent an email where he wrote “Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public.” But, one of Manning’s friend also says that Manning had the classified information for a while and was trying to do the right thing with it. Ultimately, Manning’s motives in leaking the video to WikiLeaks probably don’t matter very much. I just hope the very real potential costs in lives lost as a result of the leaked sensitive diplomatic cables are offset by the shift in popular sentiment regarding our presence in Iraq as a result of the Collateral Murder video.
A really informative article that explains the various patent issues revolving around the H.264 vs. Ogg Theora (vs. Flash) debate that’s been going on the past few months. Helped me understand the whole thing a lot better.
